Dental bonding is a process of applying a composite resin on to the surface of a tooth in order to improve its color, shape, and to get rid of its surface imperfections.

What are the advantages of bonding?

  • Bonding is a minimally invasive procedure. It usually doesn’t require the removal of material from the teeth.
  • It can be used to restore teeth that are chipped, cracked, worn out, spaced too far apart from each other, or undergone receding of gums.
  • The material applied to the teeth won’t fall off or get dislocated too easily. This is because of the composite bonding material adheres firmly to the surface of the teeth and acts as a perfect restoration.
  • The composite material can be made to perfectly match the appearance of the natural teeth. It’s translucency, texture and color can be mimicked with that of the enamel.
  • They offer excellent sealing properties and prevent the entry of microbes when applied to a cavity. This way, re-infection of the cavity will be prevented.
  • In comparison to other cosmetic dental solutions, composite bonding is an inexpensive procedure.

How is bonding done?

Though bonding is quite a simple procedure, it requires trained hands to do the job. During the initial appointment, a
thorough screening will be carried out to check for damage, tooth discoloration, tartar accumulation, cracks, cavities, existing restorations, and other factors that could affect the procedure. The composite material will be matched with the color and texture of your enamel.

The tooth receiving the restoration will be etched in order to roughen its surface. This allows the composite material to adhere to the tooth surface and provide perfect sealing. Several layers of the bonding material will be applied to the tooth, one after the other until the required contour is achieved. It will be hardened using a curing light. Finally, it may be polished to improve aesthetics.
