Veneers are tooth-colored dental restorations used for several oral cosmetic purposes. They are wafer-thin pieces of porcelain mostly used to treat teeth that are chipped, broken, worn out, discolored and spaced too far apart from each other. They can be bonded to the teeth using dental adhesives.

What are the uses of veneers?

Veneers can be used to treat the following types of teeth:

  • Worn out teeth: Teeth may tend to wear too much when you bite and chew hard foods or due to bruxism (nighttime teeth grinding). The teeth can be brought back to their ideal shape and size using veneers.
  • Cracked teeth: Teeth that have developed minor cracks due to external trauma can be treated and restored using veneers.
  • Discolored teeth: Teeth may stain severely when you consume a lot of colored foods or when you do not brush your teeth well. In most cases, they can be whitened using teeth whitening solutions. But, when the extent of discoloration is severe, they can be made to look whiter by bonding veneers to their surface.
  • Chipped/misshapen teeth: Teeth that have lost a certain edge due to external trauma would ruin the aesthetics of the smile. Sometimes, the natural teeth could emerge out of shape, which also makes the smile look bad. Veneers can be used to restore these teeth.
  • Excessively spaced teeth: By bonding veneers to the frontal surface of excessively spaced teeth, the gap between them can be reduced to give you a flawless smile.

The procedure for getting a veneer would require two visits to our dental practice. During the first visit, we would screen your teeth for cavities, tooth damage, gum diseases, discoloration, receding of gums, etc. A mold of the teeth will be taken to determine the shape, contour, and measurements of the veneer. It will be sent to a laboratory where the veneer will be fabricated from tooth-colored ceramic material. A temporary veneer may be used in its place until it is available.

During the next visit, we will remove the temporary restoration and thoroughly clean the tooth. Etching solution will be applied on the tooth to roughen it. The veneer will be placed on the tooth and checked for fit and comfort before it is bonded using dental adhesives. A curing light will be used to harden it, after which it will be polished to improve the aesthetics.
